Hip-Hop Birthday: Diddy (11/04/69)

Sean Combs aka Puff Daddy aka P. Diddy aka Diddy is celebrating his 50th birthday today so it’s only right we go down memory lane and show our respects by featuring his first official single “Can’t Hold Me Down” featuring Mase which was released in 1997. Much love to the legendary mogul.

[#GullyClassix] Jadakiss – Put Ya Hands Up

Circa 2001; Kiss Tha Game Goodbye had just come out and I’m listening to it track by track scouting what songs to add to my personal mixtapes for the commute to school. “Put Ya Hands Up” not only made those mixtapes but it stood the test of time. It gets played on every long drive, on every plane ride, or whenever I’m trying to listen to some vintage JA-DA.

#GullyClassix: Purple City – Purple City Byrdgang (feat. Jim Jones, Un Kasa & Shiest Bubz)

Today on #GullyClassix I’m presenting one of my favorite tracks from the Dipset era. This beat is ridiculous and the energy everybody brings to it is what keeps me coming back after more than a decade. Ya digggggggg?

#GullyClassix: Missy Elliot & Eminem – Busa Rhyme

Today on #GullyClassix we’re remembering when Missy Elliot and Eminem teamed up for a track entitled “Busa Rhyme” off Missy’s 1998 album Da Real World. It mostly features Eminem spitting bars and was one of those tracks that I came back to from time to time when I was younger because of Missy’s unique approach and Em’s verses.

There are better tracks on this album but I’ll save those features for a later date.

#GullyClassix: Bone Thugs-N-Harmony – No Surrender

Today on #GullyClassix we’ve got Bone Thugs-N-Harmony’s “No Surrender” from 1994’s Creepin On Ah Come Up. When they first popped up on the scene their style was one of a kind with melodic flows and harmonies I hadn’t heard in rap music from previous years. Nowadays there are a couple of new-age acts who successfully borrow Bone Thug’s iconic flow from time to time proving that their style is timeless.
